We use rollable plastic icing/sugar paste/fondant imported from Australia (Bakels). It is a dough made from sugar mixed with chemicals that forms up a clay-like texture
Is it edible?
Yes, it is. Fondant taste just like candy, it has chewy texture though it dries up from time to time. Although it is edible, many people do not eat is as it is made of pure sugar and has so many food coloring in it.
How long does fondant last?
The fondant does not actually go ‘bad’; it’s the cake on the inside which needs attention. If you’re looking to know how long you can keep the decoration toppers for, please see the following question.
Can I keep the sugar model/decoration if I do not want to eat it?
Yes, just gently lift it off the surface and wipe the bottom clean. Leave this to dry completely (it should take a couple of days if placed in a dry and cool area). Store in a clean dry box away from direct heat. A small packet of moisture absorber or some limestone will help it stay intact for years. These dry sugar pieces do not attract ants or other unwanted rodents if they are clean.
Should I keep the cake in the refrigerator?
No, cakes with fondant aren't supposed to be kept inside the refrigerator as the fondant will melt if its is too damp. Simply keep your cake in room temperature and it will be just fine.
